Tata Tiago was initially released with the name Zica and when it was released, I was like it was the car I have been waiting literally for years. For me, that was the best car I have ever seen. I remember I said gave almost the same opinion for the other models like Aria, and the Zest. And, I was not wrong while reviewing those cars. Ever since I have started using Tata Motors and their cars, I have been waiting for a big change, or say, a major turning point to exist and I can now say that this is the time I have been waiting for because this is not just a contemporary, but also a modern product that eventually fits the global standards, but just local standards in all the means of its attribute. We have all seen the hints in the leaked pics of the car and the prior analysis to the model released or leaked before the official release. Though there are minor hints about the model that it looks like the likes of the Mahindra and Tata’s other products, in fact, the manufacturers of the bike have improved a little bit in making this possible in a better way than that of the indigenous carmakers.
It was known that the name of Zica is changed to Tiago and it has to be done because of an unfortunate comparison with ‘Zika’ virus that is still spreading across the world. The name was chosen after a global crowd-sourcing competition with the name #FantasticoNameHunt, which was conducted before where the fans have selected a few names for their preferred new brand name from the shortlist of three final suggestions that were retained. Tiago, Adore, and Civet.
Now, if you look at the Tata Tiago and one who is using Tata Motors for a long time can stand tall and be proud amongst the clutch of the global entry of the car and the hatchbacks, and more than that it matches with an average quality and design that they frequently offer. The model that is used for Tiago was named initially as Zica and it was because Tata believes it as a zippy car. And, it was not a coincidence. Tiago from Tata is the latest model by Tata Motors in the segment of Cars. This new phase of Tata Motors actually began after they have launched Zest, where they did attempt to revamp the image of Tata as a more modern and vibrant car maker. That’s where it all began and continuing till Tiago.
Tata is offering Tata Tiago in five different trims; XB, XE, XM, XT, and the XZ. XE, XM, XT are around the Zest and the Bolt, XB, the base and XZ, the top-spec are the new variants in the list. You can opt for the safety of the package for as mush as around Rs. 18,000 INR over the trims like XE, XM, XT.
The model of Tiago is a modern day package to the Indian car owners in the view of a car segment and also, well-engineered.
This model of Tata has the design of Horizon Next Design Language which as a wide mesh grille that has swept back headlamps which look like the Tata family face seen in the other models like Bolt and the Zest. Tata has done some good making for Tiago to look distinctly to appear different than that of the previous models like Indica while maintaining the heritage of Tiago.
Talking about the interior, I can say that the interior of Tata Tiago is the best by any Indian Car Manufacturer so far. Cabins in Tata have always been roomy, meaning clumsy for the people sitting the back seats, but now it will a good quality along with good equipment. A top end design like XZ comes with a ConnectNext infotainment and gets the four tweeters along with the speakers.
Speaking about the Engine Transmission, it has got 1.2-litre containers of the three-cylinder Revotron engine that can develop 84bhp of power at 6000 rates per minute and 114Nm of torque. The turbocharged diesel of 1.05 litre can churn about 790bhp of power and 140Nm of torque from 1800 rpm. Both of the engines’ power in front of the wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. I assume Tata will surely offer the Tiago with an AMT gearbox in a near future.
Performance & Handling
Tiago is an independent from suspension up front with the likes of McPherson struts and coil-over springs and a torsion beam in the rear. This ride is good and handles quite predictable.
Tiago has a front disc and a rear drum brake setup that can give a good braking performance. Cars with this design work quite well.
The diesel engine of 1047 cc is powered with two versions of diesel and petrol, a fuel economy with 25 kmpl in a city road and a mileage of 27 kmpl on highways. The petrol version of the same vehicle offers with a mileage of 20kmpl on urban roads and 23 kmpl on freeways.
Apart from the XB variants, there are dual airbags that can be added to an option package along with the height of the adjustable of seats but there are no ABS. ABS and EBD with corner stability control are only available for the top specs like XZ that comes with two airbags.
If you are considering a car with good looks, along with quality interiors and respectable ride and handling, the Tiago can be an excellent choice and value of proposition in the compact of hatchback segment.
There are two models that can compete with Tata Tiago. They are Maruti Celerio and Chevrolet Beat in the compact hatchback segment.
Dual Airbags, ABS with EBD, and Corner Stability Control. Though Tata is a little late into this category, adding these make them love more.
Minor issues with the diesel engine and AC. They can be rectified though. These are the minute details where Tata can improve.
